Sampling water
Sampling plankton in a water core, at a given depth. Water column is picked up to the surface with a tube. It allows to observe life diversity at a given slice / thickness of the ocean
Water turbidity
The secchi disk allows to quantify water transparency. Disk is plunged in the water, connected to the boat with a rope, until it can not be seen. Depth is observed directly from the rope length.

Plankton sampling
The plankton is collected using a container attached to thin mesh net (20 to 150 microns). Both are left drifting behind the ship for several minutes. The 20 microns net allows to sample the phytoplankton whereas the 150 microns net is used to the zooplankton sampling.
Results of the campaign
the first day was dedicated for the sampling and the analysis of the samples with the scientist of IUEM, Roscof and Oceanopolis.
The second day was dedicated to teach sailing, and navigate friendly.

SAMPLING PLANKTON - BREST 2014 + 2015
 
Description and objective of the campaign
This program has been launched by Oceanopolis in order to collect plankton within Brest harbor  with the help of amateur sailors to be sent and analyse by IUFM, IFREMER and laboratories of Roscoff biological station. This program is typically what is called participative sciences which is one of the main key point to be developed by Astrolabe Expedition association.
 
The sampling campaign was done during a week end with the following objectives
-Sharing sciences with volunteers from both the association and  partners in Brest
-Sampling plankton to be analysed in laboratories
-Raising awareness about participative sciences programs that take place in Britany
-Trying different protocols whose aim is to collect plankton
The program managed by Oceanopolis needs coordination as it aims in collecting plankton simultaneously in 17 different locations, all within Brest harbour, several time a year, for several years. The amount of sampling is the reason why this program is a program based on participative sciences. Sailing boats that attend the program receive the required equipment for the sampling. Volunteers can get involved by going onboard the boats. Two sailing boats being members of Astrolabe Expedition association attended this sampling campaign which allowed people onboard to test different protocols, to train themselves in order to be more autonomous for dedicated campaign done by the association.
Sampling were directly analysed by laboratories that are Oceanopolis ’ partners such as Roscoff laboratories, IUFM and “Plancton du monde”.
